How to Know if a Tooth Needs to Be Extracted
Even though it does require a dental exam to determine if a tooth needs to be extracted, there are a few signs that indicate you need to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
🞹 Pain or pressure when chewing
🞹 Sensitivity to temperature or even the air
🞹 Any type of tooth pain, whether it’s intermittent, persistent, dull or sharp
🞹 Cracked or chipped teeth
🞹 Loss of permanent teeth
🞹 Swelling in the lip, mouth or jaw
🞹 Bleeding around the teeth and/or gums
🞹 Other pain in the mouth or teeth
If you experience any of these symptoms it does not automatically indicate that you need a tooth extracted. Only a dental exam can determine this. Our dentists only perform extractions if the damage or infection can not be treated with other, less invasive treatments.
How Does a Tooth Extraction Procedure Work?
The first step is for the dentist to take an x-ray of the tooth and the surrounding area. If your dentist decides that the best course of action is to remove the tooth, the x-ray will be used to determine the most efficient way to extract it. Some extractions are simple procedures, while others require the skills of an oral surgeon.
A few factors that will affect how difficult the extraction will include the length of the root, and the amount of bone holding the tooth in place. Bone density will also be factored in, along with the health of the tooth.
In some cases, if the pain is severe from a decayed or impacted tooth, the patient might need to see an emergency dentist.
Most extractions can be done quickly, without removing bone or tissue around the gums. A local anesthetic will be applied to numb the area around the tooth. Next, your dentist will use an elevator (dental instrument) to loosen the tooth from the bone. This is done by inserting the elevator between the tooth and bone. After the elevator has loosened the tooth, forceps are used to remove the one that is broken or decayed.
Sometimes there isn’t enough of the tooth left for a dentist to use an elevator or forceps. It might not have fully grown-in, broken off due to decay or be below the gum line. When this happens your dentist will push the gums back and remove part of the surrounding bone with a dental drill. Another issue that can complicate tooth extraction is the presence of multiple roots from a single tooth. In this case, the tooth will be removed in sections and the small incisions in the gum will be closed with self-dissolving sutures.
Some tooth extractions are challenging and these are usually performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgery specialist. They have the training and are licensed to administer general anesthesia or a type of intravenous sedation that will make the patient comfortable during the challenging procedure.
